
Sony’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Tempe is the big new release in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend as the horror sequel launches in 666 sites.
It is slightly lower than the number of locations of its predecessor, which opened in 707 venues on June 20 last year. Directed by Danny Boyle, 28 Years Later debuted with £3.9m and totalled £13.7m across its run.
Nia DaCosta directs The Bone Temple, which sees the return of Alfie Williams, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell and takes place immediately after the events of the first film.
It is the fourth entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise which launched in 2002 with 28 Days Later, also directed by Boyle. That title opened on £1.5m and grossed £6.4m at the box office before becoming a surprise hit internationally, taking $83m worldwide. In 2007, the Juan Carlos Fresnadillo-directed sequel 28 Weeks Later debuted in the UK with £1.6m from 401 screens for a cume of £5.4m.
The Voice Of Hind Rajab gets awards release
Next up, Warner Bros is re-releasing The Lord Of The Rings trilogy across 417 locations. The Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers and The Return Of The King first came out in 2001, 2002 and 2003, respectively. The films garnered 17 Oscars and earned more than £180m at the UK and Ireland box office.
Disney is launching Rental Family in 405 cinemas. Directed by Hikari, Brendan Fraser stars as a Tokyo-based actor who is hired by strangers to play roles in their lives. It premiered at Toronto film festival.
Dutch animation Miss Moxy is out in 278 sites via Miracle Comms and Dazzler. The film follows a pet cat that gets lost on holiday with her owners in France.
Trafalgar Releasing is screening La Traviata – ROH in 180 venues after opening the event release on Wednesday (January 14).
Kaouther Ben Hania‘s The Voice Of Hind Rajab is opening in 89 locations via Altitude. The film tells the real story of a young Palestinian girl who was killed by Israel Defence Forces during the invasion of the Gaza Strip in 2024. It premiered at Venice where it won the grand jury prize. It has since been nominated for best non-English language film at the Golden Globes and is on the Oscar shortlist and Bafta longlist in the same category.
Further releases include Tibetan-language anthology film State Of Statelessness via Day For Night and Indian comedy Rahu Ketu via Zee Studios Sunny Malik.
