‘Toy Story 5’

Disney’s Toy Story 5 leads new releases in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend as Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day also opens.

Andrew Stanton’s Toy Story 5 opens in 699 locations for Disney, a slightly wider opening than the fourth instalment in 668 locations in 2019.

Toy Story 4 opened with a mega £13.3m - the biggest opening of all time for an animated feature. Toy Story 3 had a similar success story, opening with £11.5m in 2010 before going on to reach £74.1m. It remains the 14th-highest-grossing film ever in the UK and Ireland, with number 4 in 19th place on £66.2m

The fifth instalment sees familiar characters Woody, Buzz and Jessie face a new threat from the world of electronics. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and Greta Lee lead the voice cast.

Elsewhere, Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day opens in 217 venues for Vue Lumiere. Set in 1910, Tina Gharavi’s film follows a passionate astronomer who does everything she can to avoid marriage. Hayley Bennett, Jack Whitehall, Lily Allen, Jennifer Saunders and Timothy Spall star.

Indian romance Cocktail 2 opens in 148 sites for Bakrania Media. This sequel follows a couple whose relationship is shaken by the arrival of an old friend. The distributor also has Indian drama Jindagi Once More in seven sites.

Welsh-language drama Effi O Blaenau opens in 30 cinemas for MetFilm. Marc Evans’ Glasgow premiere centres on an unemployed woman living in a small Welsh town whose chance encounter with an injured soldier offers hope of something better.

Also opening in 30 locations is Tracy Choi’s Hong Kong romance Girlfriends, through Central City Media. The film premiered at Busan film festival last September, and follows a woman from her teen years through to her mid-30s.

Curzon is releasing French drama Nino in 20 venues. Pauline Loques’ film debuted at Critics’ Week in Cannes 2025, and follows a shy young man diagnosed with throat cancer on the eve of his 29th birthday.

Venice 2024 award-winner Familiar Touch opens in nine sites for Bulldog Distribution. Sarah Friedland’s film, which won the Lion of the Future and best director in Horizons, follows an elderly woman transitioning to assisted living.

Further releases include Indian drama Cactus Pears via Lotus Visual Productions; Australian animation Lesbian Space Princess via Central City Media; and a re-release of Spanish cult horror Two Boxes: La Cabina + El Televisor via Raindance Films.

Toy Story 5’s main challenges will come from holdovers, with Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day topping the chart last time out and horror sensation Obsession recording its highest placing yet in second, both for Universal.
