The Misconceived

EXCLUSIVE: Visit Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to James N. Kienitz Wilkins’ The Misconceived, which will premiere in International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Harbour programme on January 31.

The 3D-rendered tragi-comedy about millennials turning 40 continues the journey of the character Tyler from Wilkins’ 2019 Berlin comedy drama The Plagiarists. The new feature uses a home renovation as its jumping-off point for what is described as an acerbic comic treatise on the working conditions of the contemporary creative class.

The Misconceived stars Jesse Wakeman (Donald Cried), Jess Barbagallo, John Magary (Between The Temples), and Callie Hernandez (La La Land) and will screen at the EFM in Berlin next month. Emily Davis and James N. Kienitz Wilkins are producing, with Joey Frank serving as executive producer.

Frank said, “The Misconceived is a film about labour; construction both of the movie itself and the digital 3D-rendered house within the film. The characters are rendered through a sort of digital puppetry, real accomplished downtown NY theatre actors in motion capture suits […] Production of The Misconceived provides an alternative to AI. One person brings the world into existence but through labouring in the software instead of prompting an LLM to generate the rest.”

Wilkins said, “I am pleased to work with Visit Films on The Misconceived, a truly independent movie reflecting the dream or nightmare of recent years in a medley of cinema’s past and future.” The New York-based director’s credits include Still FilmThe RepublicCommon Carrier, and Public Hearing.

Visit resident Ryan Kampe added, “James is a phenomenal visual artist who is telling a story in an innovative way, allowing us to see our own anxieties and struggles via a provocative and fun narrative about renovating a house. Something we can all identify with.”
