Todd Haynes’ Carol leads the nominations for the 2016 Golden Globe Awards nominations, which were revealed this morning at the Beverley Hills Hilton Hotel.

The period drama, based on the Patricia Highsmith novel, secured nominations for best film (drama), lead actresses Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, director Haynes and Carter Burwell for best original score.

In the best film (drama) category, Carol will compete against Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight.

In the best actress (drama) category, Blanchett and Mara will go up against Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn (the film’s sole nomination) and Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl.

The best actor (drama) category, Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) will be in competition with Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Will Smith (Concussion).

Four nominations

Films to secure four nominations included The Big Short, The Revenant and Steve Jobs.

The Big Short is up for best film (musical/comedy) against Joy, The Martian, Spy and Trainwreck.

The Big Short’s other three nominations come for Christian Bale and Steve Carell for best actor (musical/comedy), and Charles Randolph and Adam McKay for best screenplay.

As well as best film (drama), The Revenant will be up for best actor with Leonardo DiCaprio, best director for Alejandro G Inarritu and best original score for Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto.

Biopic Steve Jobs secured its four nods for Michael Fassbender as best actor, Kate Winslet as best supporting actress, best screenplay for Aaron Sorkin and best original score for Daniel Pemberton.

Three nominations

Vikander secured one of three nominations for Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, the other two coming for actor Eddie Redmayne and Alexandre Desplat for best original score.

Lenny Abrahamson’s Room also scored a hat-trick of nominations, with nods for best film, actress Larson and best screenplay for Emma Donoghue.

Other films to get three nominations included The Hateful Eight, The Martian and Spotlight.

Distributors

Twentieth Century Fox led the film distributors in the nominations with 12, followed by Universal Pictures and The Weinstein Company with eight; Paramount Pictures with five; and A24 and Sony Pictures Classics with four apiece.

Distributors to secure three nominations each included Bleecker Street, Focus Features, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Lionsgate, Open Road Films, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures.
