Screen International is profiling all the winners of the fourth Global Production Awards, which were held tonight (May 18) at the Mademoiselle Gray Barriere in Cannes.

Special Recognition Award
Winner: Netflix
Netflix is a company that needs no introduction. As soon as its name is mentioned, the distinctive ‘tu-dun’ sound that greets viewers when they log in to watch the latest buzzy series or film immediately comes to mind. Its red logo is now one of the most recognisable in the world.
Netflix is a company that has fundamentally changed the global TV and film production landscape, investing in original content around the world and popularising non-English language fare. Major production hubs outside the US have been set up to support this vision, including Shepperton Studios in the UK and significant hubs in Spain and South Korea.
Impressive credentials
Its list of global hits is long and impressive including Stranger Things from the US, Squid Game from South Korea, Bridgerton from the UK, Lupin from France, Money Heist from Spain, Wednesday — a US show made in Romania and Ireland — and Narcos made in Colombia — to name a few.
Its recent standout, UK-produced drama Adolescence, won awards and praise around the world for its bravery and powerful, challenging storytelling — illustrating once again that a story told in the UK with local actors and settings can make waves around the world. Television and film of the highest quality transcends national borders.
But as well as backing great content and brilliant creators, Netflix is a proud champion of sustainable production and, across its physical productions, it is introducing new technologies to replace our decades-old reliance on fossil fuels.
Some of these targeted on-set interventions include hydrogen power units on Bridgerton and Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, solar battery systems on Stranger Things and clean mobile batteries on The Witcher.
But this industry relies on a shared ecosystem of crew and suppliers to bring stories to life, and collaboration is essential. This is why Netflix co-founded the Clean Mobile Power Initiative to scale the supply of diesel-free alternatives across the entertainment industry.
The company continues to push forward every year with new initiatives, acting as a global leader in sustainable production, and Screen International is delighted to present this year’s special recognition award to Netflix.
