EXCLUSIVE: Vienna-based Autlook Filmsales has taken on international sales for Finlay Pretsell’s documentary feature Douglas Gordon By Douglas Gordon, which will world premiere next month in the Panorama section of the Berlinale.

The film is an intimate portrait of the Turner Prize and Venice Biennale-winning Scottish artist Douglas Gordon. The documentary blurs the boundary between reality and performance and the changing relationship between filmmaker and protagonist, raising the question of who is actually making the film.

Berlin-based Gordon is known for his films and large-scale video installations such as the award-winning 24 Hour Psycho and the 2006 Cannes premiere Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, where he collaborated with the French artist Philippe Parreno.

“Over the years we have had hours of endless conversations,” said Pretsell. ”From the very first second it was obvious that Douglas Gordon lives and breathes art. There is no downtime. No vacation. No other pastime. His whole raison d’être is to create extraordinary pieces of art. The admiration I have is unequivocal.”

Pretsell is a Bafta-winning filmmaker, whose credits include 2017 cyling doc Time Trial which played at festivals including IDFA, SXSW and CPH:DOX.

Stephanie Fuchs, CEO of Autlook said: “Douglas Gordon By Douglas Gordon is one of those rare documentaries that feels at once personal, daring, and refreshingly direct. Buyers are in for a truly unique ride — and what better place to celebrate the premiere than Berlin.”

Supported by Screen Scotland and the BFI Doc Society Fund (awarding National Lottery funding), Douglas Gordon By Douglas Gordon is produced by Parcel of Rogues in association with Sonja Henrici Creates in co-production with Grande Ourse Films.
