In it latest move to turn hit films into live theatre presentations, Lionsgate is developing a stage adaptation of its psychological thriller The Housemaid.
The film version of The Housemaid, based on Freida McFadden’s novel and starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, has grossed nearly $400m worldwide since its release in cinemas last December. Lionsgate is set to shoot a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, later this year for a December, 2027 release.
The project is being developed for the stage with production company Melting Pot and playwright Bekah Brunstetter.
Melting Pot, led by Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska, has credits including stage versions of Life Of Pi and Paranormal Activity. Brunstetter’s credits include the Broadway musical version of The Notebook.
Lionsgate launched a stage version of its Hunger Games film franchise (originally announced in 2014) in the UK late last year and is developing a musical version of La La Land for Broadway. The company’s new stage production of Dirty Dancing is set to start a North American tour in August.
Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate’s president, global products and experiences commented: “The Housemaid has all the elements for a successful stage adaptation – a blockbuster title, compelling characters, and a story full of twists and turns that builds tension and momentum in a way that naturally lends itself to the stage. This project reflects how our hit films and IP can be transformed into novel experiences. We’re excited to collaborate with Simon, Hanna, and Bekah to bring The Housemaid to theatre-goers in a new and intimate way.”
