The Blair Witch Project

Lionsgate International will begin sales talks in Cannes next month on The Blair Witch Project reboot at Lionsgate and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.

Dylan Clark, who has built up a YouTube following through his horror shorts, will direct from his rewrite of an original screenplay by Chris Devlin. Sources said the project brings “the full mythology and legacy of the franchise to a new generation of storytelling”.

The 1999 original remains a pioneering found-footage horror film about an ill-fated documentary crew that set out to investigate the folklore surrounding a witch inhabiting the Maryland woods. Made for less than $60,000 and distributed in the US through Artisan Entertainment, the film grossed $248m worldwide and remains one of the great independent success stories.

Two of the original film’s stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams will serve as executive producers alongside the original filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale. Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, and Roy Lee are producing with Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath for Divide/Conquer.

Steven Schneider is also an executive producer alongside Michael Clear and Judson Scott for Atomic Monster. Alayna Glasthal oversees for Atomic Monster and Scott O’Brien and Pavan Kalidindi are overseeing for Lionsgate. Phil Strina negotiated the deal on behalf of Lionsgate.

Clark recently signed with Universal to adapt his horror short Portrait Of God, which Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele are producing. He is also writing and will direct an adaptation of his short film Story Time, with Zak Olkewicz and LD Entertainment producing.
