I Love My Dad

Cannes buyers turned out in force for Magnolia Pictures International’s SXSW award-winner I Love My Dad as key deals closed around the world including Latin America, Spain and Middle East.

James Morosini’s comedy was a hot property heading to the Croisette last month when buyers and sellers returned en masse following two years of pandemic disruption.

The film sold to Impacto (latin America), Karma (Spain), Front Row (Middle East), Penny Black (worldwide airlines), Pictureworks (India) and Gravel Road (Africa).

Magnolia head of sales Lorna Lee Torres and international sales manager Austin Kennedy conducted the negotiations and are weighing up offers from the UK, Scandinavia, Australia/New Zealand, Eastern Europe and Ukraine.

Morosini stars opposite Patton Oswalt in the comedy about a young man who gets catfished by his estranged father in a bid to reconnect. When the father impersonates a waitress online and starts checking in matters start to spiral out of control when the son falls for the imaginary woman.

The cast includes Rachel Dratch, Lil Rel Howery, Claudia Sulewski, Amy Landecker and Ricky Velez. I Love My Dad is inspired by Morosini’s life experiences and won the grand jury prize and audience awards for narrative feature at SXSW.

Magnolia will release the film in US theatres on August 5. Mongrel will distribute in Canada this summer.
