New films from Oleg Sentsov, County Lines director Henry Blake and Austria’s Sandra Wollner are among the projects selected for the 14th edition of the Les Arcs Film Festival’s Co-Production Village.

All of the projects will compete for the €6,000 ArteKino International Award.

Ukraine’s Sentsov participates with new project Kai. The filmmaker was in Venice in 2021 with Rhino, before fighting on the front line following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Blake is attending with The Golden Radiance Of A Beetle, a 1919-set romance co-written by Xiao Tang and produced by Denzil Monk of Bosena and Victoria Bavister of Two Birds Entertainment. Blake’s debut County Lines received four Bifa nominations in 2019.

Wollner is also presenting Austria-Germany co-production Everytime. Her debut The Trouble With Being Born debuted in the Berlinale’s Encounters section in 2022, winning the jury prize.

The Co-Production Village will showcase 18 European feature film projects from 13 countries in various stages of development with the aim of helping them find co-producers, sales agents, distributors and financing partners. After moving online due to the pandemic in 2020, Les Arcs Festival returned as an in-person event last year.

Organisers of the Co-production Village received 311 submissions, a 40% increase compared to the previous year. Of the projects selected, seven are directed by female filmmakers, representing 39% of the selection, a small increase from last year’s 34%. Nine of the titles are first features, six are second features and three are return efforts from more established filmmakers.

The Industry Village’s editorial manager Lison Hervé told Screen: “We only select projects that do not yet have an international sales agent and try to have a balance between emerging and more established filmmakers”, adding that they are “particularly attentive to the diversity of nationalities, budgets and genres.”

Les Arcs has also confirmed the eight emerging directors for its Talent Village, who will participate in a three-day workshop at the event and give them the chance to pitch their projects to industry professionals at the Co-Production Village. The Work In Progress selection will be announced at a later stage.

Last year, the Industry Village welcomed 515 professionals despite the ongoing pandemic. Accreditations close this week and organizers expect around 550 professionals to attend, back to 2019 levels.

The Les Arcs Film Festival runs Dec 10 – 17 with the Industry Village running Dec 10 – 13.
