Filming has wrapped in the UK on Ben Bond’s post-Brexit love story The Drifters, which is backed by Creative England and the BFI.
A quartet of rising stars head the cast: Lucie Bourdeu (Kings For A Day), Jonathan Ajayi (known for the stage play revival of Brothers Size by Moonlight’s Tarell Alvin McCraney), Tom Sweet (Childhood Of A Leader) and Ariyon Bakare (Star Wars: Rogue One).
The Drifters follows Kofi, an illegal African migrant, and Fanny, a French waitress, who both find themselves homeless.
The film is produced by Starcross Entertainment’s Iona Sweeney with Theresa Larche as co-producer. Executive producers are recent Screen Future Leader Andy Brunskill, Starcross’s Rafic Said, Amon Zia Mahmud and Ben Thompson, Creative England’s Paul Ashton, as well as Elinor Day, Waleed Saigol and Ali Khatau. Funding came from private sources and Creative England and the BFI backed the project’s development.
The project shot on location in London and Devon for four weeks.
The Drifters marks the feature debut of Bond, who has credits including executive producer on Bornila Chatterjee’s 2017 TIFF title The Hungry, and as a writer on Nick Hamm’s Killing Bono and the TV series Skins. He is also the former managing director of production company Hoot Comedy and genre outfit Bad Owl Films.
Starcross Entertainment is Bond’s new venture and has been launched with his Hoot and Bad Owl partner Ben Thompson alongside LA-based Amon Zia Mahmud and Blackstone financier Rafic Said. The company is plotting a slate of film and TV projects and also recently boarded Harry Michell’s upcoming comedy Ilkley.
