Lionsgate said on Thursday that filming has begun in Thailand on the origins story John Rambo directed by Jalmari Helander.
Production is scheduled to take place across the country in locations including Bangkok, Krabi, Phang Nga, and Kanchanaburi.
Joining previously-announced Noah Centineo in the title role are yao from Sinners, Jason Tobin from A Thousand Blows, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong from The White Lotus.
Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani co-wrote the screenplay, which sets the action years before the 1982 franchise-starter First Blood that starred Sylvester Stallone.
Helander said, “When I was 11, I saw First Blood for the first time, and it changed my life. Rambo wasn’t just a film to me – it stayed with me growing up and was a defining influence on why I wanted to become a filmmaker. As we begin production on the origin of John Rambo, we’re going back to the beginning. This is Rambo stripped down, raw, and real – a survival story about endurance, persistence, and lost innocence.”
Producers are Kevin King Templeton and Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger for Millennium Media, Michael Disco and Angela Russo-
Late last year Lionsgate struck a deal with Millennium Media to acquire worldwide rights to John Rambo. The studio distributed the fourth and fifth Rambo instalments, Rambo and Rambo: Last Blood, in North America, and holds UK rights to Last Blood. It also distributed First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III across Latin America and Southeast Asia.
