SAG-AFTRA on strike last week

SAG-AFTRA and studios and streamers negotiating representative Alliance Of Motion Picture And Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative new deal.

The Guild confirmed the agreement over the weekend. No details were disclosed, although the deal is reportedly for four years. The national board will scrutinise terms in the coming days before it votes on whether or not to ratify.

Negotiations began on February 9 and paused on March 15 (when the Writers Guild of America began their negotiations) before resuming on April 27 and concluding on May 2. AI guardrails, pay, health and insurance plans, and streamer residuals are understood to have been the key talking points.

The climate of talks this year has been markedly different to the last time the Guilds negotiated with the AMPTP in 2023, when SAG-AFTRA went on strike for 118 days and the WGA downed pens for 148 days to the detriment of all but the most highly-paid A-listers in Hollywood.

This round of talks has gone far more smoothly. The WGA ratified a new four-year deal on April 24 that featured an increased health plan contribution rate and caps, and some concessions around AI.

The Directors Guild Of America (DGA) led by UK Oscar-winner Christopher Nolan is scheduled begin its talks on May 11. The Guild has said production levels, AI, studio consolidation and rising health care costs will be on the agenda. The DGA’s contract expires on June 30.
