Screen International is profiling all the winners of the third Global Production Awards, which were held tonight (May 19) at the Mademoiselle Gray Barriere in Cannes.
City of Film
Winner: Belfast, Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland Screen)
This fiercely contested category drew entries from around the world, and was presented to a city whose work has helped deliver for television and filmmakers — while also developing local skills and expertise and boosting the economy.
All submissions had to show a clear vision of the role film and television production plays in the economic and cultural health of their city. Judges looked at a range of work taking place, how that city has responded to and supported film and television programme makers, and how it continues to develop its screen offering.
Category winner Belfast excelled in all of these areas and more, with one judge noting the city had “a clear vision on how to leverage its success to create further growth in the sector and local economy”.
The judges were also impressed by how the city has successfully adopted a cross-sector approach to attract inward production and economic investment, which includes leveraging the tourist industry. It has also invested in skills and sustainability initiatives, and developed robust support for local and indigenous productions across both Irish-language and Ulster Scots storytelling. One judge praised the “good range of educational programmes to support filmmakers and the city’s healthy variety of productions and good employment figures.”
