Screen International is profiling all the winners of the third Global Production Awards, which were held tonight (May 19) at the Mademoiselle Gray Barriere in Cannes.
Sustainable Production
Winner: Love Hurts (Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, US)
This year’s award went to an individual film production that showcased best practice in sustainable, green filming, delivering a plan on sustainability with a measurable contribution to carbon reduction and offsetting, along with benefits to the environment and local community.
Universal Pictures’ high-octane action film Love Hurts, from 87North, won the category by impressing the judges with its commitment to sustainability throughout development, production and marketing. Filmmakers also participated in the NBCUniversal Sustainable Production Program, which included implementing its sustainable production standards to meet minimum metrics for equipment.
Universal also ensured the production’s environmental impact was minimised through three key goals: reducing fuel and energy consumption, ensuring sustainable waste management and promoting reuse, and providing resources and support to inspire the crew to take action across the production. A dedicated eco department, including an eco advisor and eco specialist, were hired to execute these goals.
One judge praised the “high level of innovation in a carbon intensive area with positive implications for future productions.” Another pointed to the fact the production, which shot in Winnipeg, Canada, was one of the first to use a large hybrid generator. “Upgrading the electric infrastructure, allowing access to a clean hydro-powered grid, eliminated the need for large generators for future productions as well.”
The panel was particularly impressed by the fact the sustainability initiatives implemented by the Love Hurts team presented a clear blueprint for productions that will visit the area in the future. “The long-term infrastructure development is evident and very powerful,” commented one judge.
