Netflix dominated the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards as The Lost Daughter took home the prizes for best film and director and screenplay for Maggie Gyllenhaal in an in-person ceremony on Santa Monica Beach that honoured diversity.
Sunday’s (6) triumph at Film Independent’s 37th awards show saw the Elena Ferrante adaptation starring Oscar nominated Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley convert three of its four nominations.
Buckley was also in contention for supporting actress and while many Oscar contenders were ineligible for the Spirit Awards due to the $22.5m budget limit, The Lost Daughter’s triumph will only serve to further boost its profile in the Academy Awards race, where it is nominated for Gyllenhaal’s adapted screenplay and for Colman and Buckley in acting categories.
Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s extraordinary awards season run continued as his Japanese drama Drive My Car, released in the US via Janus Films, was named best international film. Hulu’s Summer Of Soul won best documentary and Fran Kranz’s Mass, distributed by Bleecker Street in the US, won for the Robert Altman Award for best ensemble.
In the acting categories Coda’s Troy Kotsur from Apple’s Coda bolstered his Oscar prospects following his recent SAG win with the support actor award on Sunday evening. Ruth Negga won best supporting actress for Netflix’s Passing and A24 films delivered best lead acting wins for Taylour Paige from Zola and Simon Rex from Red Rocket.
Netflix emerged with six awards, followed by A24 on three. The Spirit Awards traditionally takes place the day before the Oscars but this year ran three weeks prior due to scheduling complications arising from the pandemic.
