‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ falls hard – but stays top 

UPDATE: Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Love And Thunder will cross $500m at the worldwide box office today (July 18) despite big drops in its second session. The tentpole fell an estimated 68% from the opening weekend number in North America, and 59% in international markets.  

Taika Waititi’s film grossed a confirmed $46.5m in North America and $61.7m from international markets to top Comscore’s global box office chart. The weekend box office brings the respective cumulative totals to $233.7m and $266m, combining for $499.7m worldwide. 

Thor: Love And Thunder has already exceeded the final totals of eight Marvel Cinematic Universe films – if China and Russia are excluded. The new film has yet to open in China and Russia. 

This fourth Thor film received a boost thanks to its arrival in France last week, grossing an estimated $7m and a confirmed $8.4m including previews – 16% ahead of Thor: Ragnarok. 

In confirmed cumulative totals, UK/Ireland leads the field with $25m, ahead of Australia ($21.6m), South Korea ($20.8m), Mexico ($19m) and India ($14.5m).  

Love And Thunder has now pushed past the final total achieved by Thor in 2011: $449m. It shouldn’t have any trouble matching the $645m reached by Thor: The Dark World in 2013. It remains to be seen if it has the momentum to catch Thor: Ragnarok’s tally of $854m. That 2017 film had the advantage of release in both Russia and China, yielding a combined $136m. 

This coming weekend Thor: Love And Thunder arrives in Ukraine – where cinemas are open in the west of the country. 

Also for Disney, Pixar’s Lightyear has now fallen out of the global top 10 chart. The Buzz Lightyear origin story grossed an estimated $4m at the weekend, taking the worldwide total to $213m. Among international markets, Mexico leads with $17.1m. 

‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ boosted by Japan opening 

UPDATE: Now in its third weekend of play in most markets, Universal’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru experienced gentler falls than was the case for current box office rival Thor: Love And Thunder. This fifth film in the Despicable Me/Minions franchise fell a confirmed 42% in North America and just 33% in international markets. 

Cumulative totals are $263.4m in North America and $270.9m for international, combining for $534.2m – the biggest animated release of the pandemic. The film is 13% below Minions at the same point of release, and 5% ahead of Despicable Me 3

The Rise Of Gru was boosted by opening in Japan. Last Friday saw rainstorms and flood warnings in western and eastern parts of the country, damping down the opening day box office. Numbers rose 254% on the Saturday, helping the film to a $4.5m weekend total – in second place, behind local film Kingdom 2. Today (July 18) is the Marine Day public holiday in Japan, celebrating the importance of the ocean in Japan as a maritime nation. 

Mexico, declining 30%, led the holdover territories with $3.9m. Germany and UK/Ireland fell 38% and 39%, respectively, grossing an estimated $3.3m and $3.2m. Rising temperatures created a challenge in the UK – however, the school holiday has begun in parts of the country, including Scotland. 

In cumulative totals, Mexico leads the international pack with $28.1m, ahead of UK/Ireland with $27.6m. Australia, where The Rise Of Gru is now in its fourth week of release, has $24.9m following a $2.6m weekend. Germany has produced $16.4m.

This latest title from Illumination Entertainment lands this Wednesday (July 20) in South Korea, with Italy to follow on August 18. 

The Rise Of Gru is now 46% of the way to matching the $1.16bn global total achieved by Minions in 2015, and has reached 52% of the $1.03bn tally for 2017’s Despicable Me 3

Also for Universal, Jurassic World Dominion added a confirmed $13.7m worldwide, pushing the film through the $900m barrier, with a $902.9m total. Dominion stands at $543.1m internationally and $359.9m in North America and now ranks 66th place in the all-time global box office chart – up from 74th place a week ago. 

Universal/Blumhouse’s The Black Phone added $8.8m, pushing the global total to $114.7m. Future key markets include Australia and Brazil (both July 21), and South Korea (September 7). 

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ makes all-time top 20 with $1.24bn 

UPDATE: Paramount and Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick enjoyed very strong holds in both North America (down a confirmed 21% on $12.3m for $618.2m) and international markets (down 18% on $20.3m for $620.6m). The film’s cumulative worldwide total of $1.24bn places it in the all-time top 20 – just below 19th-ranked Incredibles 2 (also $1.24bn). 

Last week, the Tom Cruise film became Paramount’s biggest ever release in North America, beating the original 1997 release of Titanic ($600.8m) – although that ignores the 2012 3D rerelease of the James Cameron blockbuster, which would take Titanic to $659.4m in North America. Maverick is also Paramount’s biggest global hit, beating Transformers: Dark Of The Moon ($1.12bn) and Transformers: Age Of Extinction ($1.10bn). 

The weekend saw a strong result for Maverick in South Korea, where the film is still only in its fourth week of release. Box office fell just 12% to a chart-topping $6.5m – taking the total to $47.2m. UK/Ireland remains the top international market, with a powerful $89.8m. 

So far, there is no release in China or Russia scheduled for the film. 

‘Where The Crawdads Sing’ opens with $17.3m 

UPDATE: The Reese Witherspoon-produced Where The Crawdads Sing, adapted from the 2018 Delia Owens bestseller, has begun with a strong confirmed $17.3m in North America – ahead of distributor Sony’s expectations. The film has yet to land in international markets – and begins to do so this week, including UK/Ireland and Mexico. 

Sony bills the film as an adult mystery thriller/drama. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as a woman who lives alone in the marshes of her North Carolina community – and is shunned and misunderstood by the local population. When a popular and celebrated young man (Harris Dickinson) is found dead, ‘the Marsh Girl’ becomes a murder suspect. 

Meanwhile, Sony Pictures International has scored a local hit in Spain with its own production of Padre no hay más que uno 3 (Father There Is Only One 3). The sequel debuted in the top spot with a confirmed four-day total of $3.2m – the highest for a local title since 2016. The opening weekend of the third chapter in the comedy franchise bested the previous instalment by 83% and the original by 77%. Santiago Segura directs and stars in the comedy about the antics of a multi-generational family during the Christmas season. 

‘Detectives Vs Sleuths’ rises in China 

Sentimental drama Lighting Up The Stars slipped from the top spot of China’s box office in its fourth week of release, replaced by Detectives Vs Sleuths, which rises to the top on its second weekend. Wai Ka-Fai’s Hong Kong crime action film grossed $18.1m – ahead of new entrant Mozart From Space ($16.4m) and Lighting Up The Stars ($16.1m). 

Chen Sicheng (Detective Chinatown franchise) directs family fantasy adventure Mozart From Space – billed as the story of a boy and a mysterious alien creature with wonderful musical ability.
