EXCLUSIVE: LGBTQ+ drama We’ll Find Happiness inspired a robust response from buyers at the recent EFM in Berlin, with deals closing for the US, UK/Ireland, France, and Belgium.
Dark Star Pictures acquired US rights from Canadian industry veteran Anick Poirier to Léa Pool’s French-language drama about two persecuted young men who risk everything for the right to love each other.
Cinemien picked up the film for UK/Ireland, Europe excluding France and French-speaking Belgium, and Israel. Épicentre Films acquired for France, and Imovision for Brazil. Poirier negotiated the deals on behalf of the filmmakers.
As previously announced, Les Films Opale and Entract Films will distribute in Canada, and Tarantula Distribution holds Benelux rights.
Production took place in Canada, Morocco and Luxembourg on We’ll Find Happiness, which tells of Saad, a young Moroccan exile in Quebec who will do anything to save Reza, his Iranian refugee lover who faces deportation and likely death. When Saad tries to seduce a high-ranking spokesperson from the ministry of immigration it sets off a fateful chain of events.
Mehdi Meskar and Aron Archer star and Canada’s Lyla Films and Iris Productions from Luxembourg serve as co-producers.
Poirier is the former head of sales at Montreal-based Seville International and co-founder of sales agency WaZabi Films.
