‘Wife Of A Spy’

The line-up of the 77th Venice Film Festival (September 2-12) has been announced.

The big talking points from this year’s selection include an improved gender split, with eight women selected for the competition section (compared to two last year), and a lack of major US projects. Venice will be one of the first major film festivals to take place as a physical event following the Covid-19 outbreak.

Among the big-name auteurs selected are Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Michel Franco (Nuevo Orden), Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Wife Of A Spy), Andrei Konchalovsky (Dear Comrades), Gianfranco Rosi (Notturno) and Malgorzata Szumowska (Never Gonna Snow Again, co-dircted by Michal Englert).

UK projects include Roger Michell’s The Duke, starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren; and Luke Holland documentary Final Account, both playing out of competition. There are also two UK co-pros playing in the Horizons section: UK/Portugal title Listen, from Portuguese director Ana Rocha de Sousa; and Uberto Pasolini’s Italy/Romania/UK project Nowhere Special starring James Norton.

As previously announced, Daniele Luchetti’s Lacci will open the festival out of competition. Nomadland, as part of a ’festival alliance’, will also play at Toronto, New York and a special drive-in screening organised by Telluride.

Cate Blanchett will preside over the Competition jury that also includes Joanna Hogg and Christian Petzold.

At the press conference, festival director Alberto Barbera said more titles may be added closer to the festival.
