Oscars 2016: Acting Nominations in Pictures

trumbo

Bryan Cranston has been nominated for the title role in Trumbo, chronicling the famous screenwriter and member of the Hollywood Ten. This is his first Oscar nomination.

The Martian

Matt Damon earned a nomination for Best Actor for his role in The Martian, where he plays a plucky astronaut stranded on Mars. Damon has previously won an Oscar in 1998 for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.

the revenant

The Revenant's Leonardo DiCaprio earns a Best Actor nom for his role in the survival epic. DiCaprio has previously been nominated five times by The Academy.

Steve Jobs

For his role as genius Apple creator Steve Jobs, Michael Fassbender has garnered a Best Actor nomination. This is his second Oscar nomination.

The Danish Girl

Eddie Redmayne is nominated for Best Actor for his role as a transgender painter in The Danish Girl. Redmayne won an Oscar last year for his role in The Theory of Everything.

Cate Blanchett is nominated for Best Actress for her title role in the drama Carol. Blanchett has previously won two Oscars for Blue Jasmine (2014) and The Aviator (2005).

brie larson room

Brie Larson is nominated for Best Actress for her role in Room. The role has also earned her a BAFTA nomination and a Golden Globe award.

Joy

Jennifer Lawrence has garnered a Best Actress nomination for her role as homemaker turned inventor in Joy. Lawrence won an Oscar in 2013 for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.

45 Years

Charlotte Rampling has been nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in 45 Years. This is her first Oscar nomination.

Saoirse Ronan Brooklyn

Newcomer Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for Best Actress for her role in Brooklyn. She was nominated in 2007 for her role in Atonement.

Christian Bale has earned a Best Supporting Actor nom for his role in The Big Short. He has previously won an Academy Award for his work in The Fighter (2011).

tom hardy the revenant

Tom Hardy has garnered a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in The Revenant. This is his first Oscar nomination.

mark ruffalo spotlight

For his role in the investigative drama Spotlight, Mark Ruffalo has earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination. This is his third nomination, including nods for his roles in last year's Foxcatcher and The Kids Are Alright (2011).

sylvester stallone creed

Sylvester Stallone has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for reprising his seminal role as Rocky Balboa in Creed. He has been nominated twice previously for his role in Rocky (1976), both as an actor and as the screenwriter.

the hateful eight

Jennifer Jason Leigh has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. This is her first Academy Award nomination.

Rooney Mara has garnered a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role opposite Cate Blanchett in the romance drama Carol. She was previously nominated in 2012 for her role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

For her role as an investigative journalist in Spotlight, Rachel McAdams has earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination.This is her first Oscar nomination.

the danish girl alicia vikander

Alicia Vikander has garnered a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in The Danish Girl. This is her first Oscar nomination.

kate winslet steve jobs

Kate Winslet has earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in the biopic Steve Jobs. This is Winslet's seventh nomination. She has previously won an Oscar for The Reader (2008).
