‘Aftersun’, ‘The Woman King’

Charlotte Wells’ indie drama Aftersun and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King headed the winners at the second Girls On Film awards, from the UK podcast celebrating exceptional women in cinema.

Aftersun received the best feature film award, four days after it picked up the Bafta for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer. The film also won best publicity campaign, for Mubi with Organic for theatrical & awards publicity, and DDA for awards publicity.

The Woman King won the best ensemble prize, and best female friendship on-screen; actor and Screen 2021 Star of Tomorrow Sheila Atim accepted the awards in-person. Lead actress Viola Davis also took the Feminist Superhero prize.

The Woman King received two nominations at last weekend’s Baftas, plus a Rising Star nomination for Atim.

Further winners included best composer Hildur Gudnadottir for Women Talking and Tar; Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, winner of best female orgasm; and The Wonder, which took best cinematographer for Ari Wegner (also for The Power Of The Dog) and an Ally award for director Sebastian Lelio.

The British Blacklist founder Akua Gyamfi was awarded the Diversity Badge of Honour prize.

Nominees for the awards were selected by a panel of film critics and journalists, with the winners selected by the Girls On Film team. Girls On Film was launched by critic and broadcaster Anna Smith and producer Hedda Archbold, aiming to give a fresh perspective on gender in films.
