‘Argentina, 1985’

In a one-two for Amazon’s original film and TV businesses Santiago Mitre’s courtroom drama Argentina, 1985 took five top honours at the 2023 Platino Awards on Saturday night (April 22), while News Of a Kidnapping from Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García claimed four.

Amazon Studios’ Argentina, 1985 won best Ibero-American fiction film, best actor for Ricardo Darín, best screenplay for co-writers Mitre and Mariano Llinas, best art direction, and film & education in values awards.

Satuday’s triumph here at Madrid’s IFEMA Municipal Palace follows Oscar and Bafta nominations and the Goya for best Iberoamerican film. The film premiered in Venice.

Spain’s Laia Costa took best actress for her role in Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s Lullaby, sold by Latido Films and produced by Spain’s Sayaka Producciones, Encanta Films and Buena Pinta Media. Costa plays a young mother facing changes in her life and wrestles with doubts in her relationship with her husband and her mother.

News Of A Kidnapping, the adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s novel, was produced by Chile’s Invercine & Wood and Stuart Ford’s Los Angeles-based AGC Studios for Prime Video.

Wood (Sundance winner Violeta Went To Heaven) and García took best series creator award and three more: best series, best series actress for Cristina Umaña, and best series ensemble actress for Majida Issa – both Colombia-born.

A box office breakout in France and Spain, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Galician western thriller The Beasts took the best director award as well as best supporting actor for Luis Zahera, best editing, and best sound.

The production from Barcelona-based Arcadia Motion Pictures and sold by Latido debuted in Cannes in the Premieres showcase and also won nine Goya Awards.

The new best Ibero-American comedy prize went to a Spanish film, the Mediapro Studio-produced Official Competition directed by Argentinians Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat and starring Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.

Alejandro Loayza Grisi’s Utama took the first two Platino prizes for a Bolivian production. The Alma Films and La Mayor Cine drama, sold internationally by France’s Alpha Violet, has won numerous international awards and takes place in the Bolivian highlands where an elderly couple’s traditional existence is endangered by a drought.

The best first film award went to Manuela Martelli’s 1976, a depiction of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship from the point of view of a woman –inspired by the director’s grandma. It premiered in Cannes Director’s Fortnight and has sold widely through Luxbox.

Oscar-winner Benicio del Toro received the Honorary Award from Enrique Cerezo, president of Spain’s EGEDA producers rights collection society, which organises the Awards. Del Toro recalled the beginning of his career when he was rejected at all his Hollywood auditions until a casting director suggested he change his name to hide his Latin heritage. On a separate occasion he was counselled to undergo surgery to make his eyes bigger. He declined to follow either piece of advice and the rest is history.
