Robert Aramayo at the 2026 Baftas

One Battle After Another, Sinners and a shocked Robert Aramayo were the big winners at the 2026 Bafta Film Awards.

One Battle After Another won six awards, including best film, best director and adapted screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson, and best supporting actor for Sean Penn (who was unable to attend). It also won for Michael Bauman’s cinematography and Andy Jurgensen’s editing.

Whilst on stage, Anderson said: “Anybody who says movies aren’t good anymore can piss right off because this was a good fucking year.” He also paid tribute to UK-born producer/assistant director Adam Somner, who died of cancer during production.

Ryan Coogler made Bafta history for Sinners by becoming the first Black winner of the original screenplay award. Wunmi Mosaku also won the supporting actress award. In her speech, she thanked her mother and mother-in-law for helping out with her daughter during the shoot. Ludwig Göransson won best score but was unable attend because he is working on The Odyssey, according to Coogler, who collected his award on his behalf.

Robert Aramayo won two awards on the night; best actor and the rising star award. He was clearly shocked when he won the former, and praised fellow nominee Ethan Hawke for a talk he gave at Juilliard about longevity in the industry when Aramayo studied there. I Swear, about the life of John Davidson, who has severe Tourette’s syndrome, also won for casting.

Hamnet won outstanding British film and the leading actress award for Jessie Buckley, who said in a somewhat flustered speech that she dreamed of being “a little bit like Judi Dench” at the start of her career.

Sentimental Value converted one of its eight nominations, winning film not in the English language. Director Joachim Trier said: “This is the first time a Norwegian film has won a Bafta, we’re normally better at Skiing.”

Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies won the outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer for My Father’s Shadow.

First-time host

Alan Cumming was hosting for the first time and he performed a skit where he handed out classic British snacks to the stars in the audience, including Hula Hoops to Emma Stone.

On a few occasions, Davidson’s tics could be heard during the ceremony, with Cumming apologising for any bad language on stage. Bafta told Screen that the UK broadcast of the ceremony would comply with its pre-watershed slot.

Donna Langley, awarded the Bafta Fellowship, spoke of the film industry facing “moments of change and disruption” on stage.

She said: “As we move forward, let’s remember the future of this business is not something that happens to us. It’s something we shape…by the risks we take and the people we back. So, let us continue to adapt, be resilient, and make room for new voices.”
