The figure tops Fifty Shades Freed, which took £2.66m when it opened last Friday (Feb 9).

It also tops several recent superhero film UK opening days such as Thor: Ragnarok (£2.13m) and Deadpool (£2.3m).

The biggest ever official opening weekend for a Marvel film is Avengers: Age Of Ultron, which posted £18m including £3.6m in previews.

With the half-term holiday running this week, Disney will be hoping that Black Panther can post a show-stopping figure.

The UK was one of the first territories to open the film, alongside Hong Kong and Taiwan. France, Italy, Germany and Spain all come this week before the US release on Friday (Feb 16).

The record opening day box office for a film in the UK remains Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had a Thursday opening of £9.68m.
