South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong, whose last three features played in Competition at Cannes, has set his next film at Netflix.
Possible Love (working title) will mark Lee’s first feature since 2018 psychological drama Burning, which won the Fipresci prize at Cannes and made the international feature film shortlist at the Oscars.
The story will follow the intertwined lives of two married couples who lead completely opposite lives. As their worlds collide, fractures begin to appear in their daily existence. The two central couples will be played by Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong.
Jeon previously worked with Lee on Secret Sunshine, for which she won best actress at Cannes in 2007. She previously paired with co-star Sul in I Wish I Had a Wife, Birthday and 2023 Netflix thriller Kill Boksoon.
The upcoming film also reunites director Lee with Sul, having previously worked together on Peppermint Candy in 1999, Oasis in 2002 and A Brand New Life in 2009.
Zo is known for his roles in Disney+ series Moving and political thriller Escape From Mogadishu while Cho’s credits include Oscar-winner Parasite and mystery thriller Hidden Face.
Possible Love is co-written by Oh Jung-mi, Lee’s collaborator on Burning, and produced by Lee’s Pine House Film.
The director is known for films that offer a sharp portrayal of the complexities of Korean society, while illuminating universal human experiences through a personal lens.
Lee is among the most acclaimed filmmakers working in South Korea today, having won the Silver Lion for best director at Venice for Oasis in 2002; the best screenplay award at Cannes for Poetry in 2010; and the Fipresci prize at Cannes with Burning in 2018. He was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Asian Film Awards in 2019.
