Warner Bros has entered the Michael B. Jordan Civil Rights drama Just Mercy in this upcoming awards season, moving up the release date to December.
The film, which also reunites director Destin Daniel Cretton with his Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle star Brie Larson, will open in limited release on December 25 and expand wide on January 10, 2020, which is one week earlier than the original release date.
A Toronto premiere slot appears possible for Just Mercy, in which Jordan portrays Bryan Stevenson, the renowned defence lawyer and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, as he looks back on his career and in particular the case of a condemned death row prisoner whom he fought to free.
Warner Bros’ awards season stable at this relatively early and untested stage includes supervillain origins story Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix, which Screendaily has tipped for a Venice slot and is being talked of as a possible Competition selection on the Lido; drama and Donna Tartt adaptation The Goldfinch starring Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman; and Edward Norton’s Jonathan Lethem noir adaptation Motherless Brooklyn.
Warner Bros also announced on Tuesday it is moving back The Untitled Sesame Street Film starring Anne Hathaway from January 15, 2021, to June 4, 2021. The $15m Sundance worldwide acquisition Blinded By The Light directed by Gurinder Chadha moves back two days this year from August 14 to August 16.
