EXCLUSIVE: Production has wrapped in Norway on Lene Berg’s true crime docu-fiction The Horsemen Of The Apocalypse, starring The Ugly Stepsister actress Ane Dahl Torp.
Switzerland-based First Hand Films has boarded world sales on the Norwegian feature, excluding Norway, Sweden and Germany.
The Horsemen Of The Apocalypse is a true crime story set in 1975, when Berg’s father, director Arnljot Berg, was arrested in Paris and accused of murdering his third wife. Lene Berg uses memory, staged reconstructions and excerpts from Arnljot’s own films to try to explore how stories are shaped by power, guilt, desire and the cinematic gaze.
It is produced by Ellen Ugelstad for Norway’s Twentyone Pictures. Co-producers are Story AB, Melissa Lindgren, Alma Bang, Ruth Erdsfeld and Norway’s Amacord.
Backers include the Norwegian Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute, Viken Filmcenter, Oslo Filmfund, Fritt Ord, Art Council Norway, The Audio Visual Fund, Filmstiftung NRW and Arte.
Olav Waastad and Carl Martin Eggesbo act alongside Torp; as does Lene Berg herself.
The film participated in the Cannes Docs Nordic Showcase at the 2024 Marche du Film. It is now in the edit.
“Lene Berg’s innovative and dynamic filmmaking style grabbed my attention immediately when we met in Cannes – and the fact that she is imposing this daring style on such a deeply personal story is all the more intriguing,” said First Hand Films founder and CEO Esther van Messel.
“From the very beginning, Esther showed genuine trust in the project and in us as filmmakers,” said Ugelstad.
“Both Ellen and Esther understand that filmmaking is about trust, intuition and persistence – exactly what this personal story needs to reach audiences in Norway and internationally,” added Berg.
Lene Berg has previously made an art installation, titled Fra Far [translation: From Father], about the 1975 incident. She has also directed four feature films, including 2019 crime drama False Belief.
