Warner Bros Clockwork is in exclusive negotiations to take Park Chan-wook’s upcoming English-language western The Brigands Of Rattlecreek for North America.

The deal (which includes Canada) would be the second big acquisition for Clockwork, Warner Bros’ new specialty division. Last month the operation bought world rights excluding France, to Sean Baker’s Ti Amo!, set for release next year. The unit is also set to release a new version of Ken Russell’s controversial 1971 film The Devils, which is screening at the Cannes festival this week.

The Brigands Of Rattlecreek is being pre-sold at Cannes – where Park is president of this year’s jury – by Patrick Wachsberger’s 193, with WME Independent and CAA Media Finance representing the film for North America.

Matthew McConaughey, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler and China’s Tang Wei will star in the story of a sheriff who, after witnessing the massacre of his wife and their townspeople by a gang of gunslingers, teams up with a mysterious doctor to take revenge on the bandits. Production is expected to begin early next year.

Park, whose credits include recent South Korean Oscar submission No Other Choice, Oldboy, and Decision To Leave, will direct from a screenplay by S Craig Zahler. Bradley J Fischer is producing for Wise Owl together with Park for Moho Film.

The deal with Clockwork was first reported by Deadline.
