One Battle After Another cemented its status as the frontrunner for the best picture Oscar with the top prize at an emotional 37th Annual Producers Guild Awards, as producers Paul Thomas Anderson and Sara Murphy paid tribute to the Warner Bros team days after the $110bn Paramount-WBD merger rocked the industry.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to a father’s love for his daughter wrapped in a madcap action adventure scooped the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The PGA win is a robust Oscar bellwether, with 17 of the last 25 winners going on to claim the best picture Academy Award. Anora won both last year.
Sara Murphy, who produced alongside Adam Somner and Anderson, told the audience at Fairmont Century Plaza on Saturday (February 28): “Now more than ever with the continued looming contraction of the industry, we need to continue to collectively champion original films, original storytelling, and also ensure the theatrical life of these films. To that end I want to thank every single human individual at Warner Bros theatrical distribution and marketing for ensuring the theatrical life of our film.”
Anderson thanked Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the Warner Bros motion picture group co-heads who orchestrated a remarkable run of hits in 2025 when the studio’s global box office reached $4.4bn. He said the executives “should get an award for enduring a lot… you kept your heads down and protected [us]. Whatever the road lies ahead, your work this year is so spectacular that I share this with you… Long may you wave whatever the future holds. It is one battle after another.”
Other Hollywood luminaries also used their time on the podium to speak out. Presenting Jason Blum with the Milestone Award, media mogul Barry Diller name-checked former Warner Bros studio heads and remarked, “Oh God, what would Jack Warner do to know he had been succeeded by a stunt pilot?” The reference Paramount CEO David Ellison’s hobby as an aerobatic pilot drew laughter from the audience.
In other key wins Netflix/Sony’s Oscar frontrunner KPop Demon Hunters produced by Michelle L.M. Wong took the animated feature prize, and My Mom Jayne: A Film By Mariska Hargitay produced by Hargitay and Trish Adlesic prevailed in the documentary feature category.
Adolescence won the David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Limited or Anthology Series Television. Producers are Mark Herbert, Emily Feller, Hannah Walters, Stephen Graham, Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, Nina Wolarsky, Jack Thorne, Philip Barantini, Carina Sposato, Niall Shamma, Peter Balm, and Jo Johnson.
In previously announced special honours, Amy Pascal received the David O. Selznick Award, and Mara Brock Akil the Norman Lear Award for their achievements and contributions to the industry.
