The final longlist for the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (Bifa) has been unveiled, with actors from Rye Lane and Scrapper among those longlisted for the breakthrough performance award.

Fifteen actors are on the list, including David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah, co-leads in Raine Allen-Miller’s romantic comedy Rye Lane; and Lola Campbell and Alin Uzun from Charlotte Regan’s Sundance drama Scrapper.

Also listed are Mia McKenna Bruce for her lead role in Molly Manning Walker’s clubbing holiday drama How To Have Sex; and Keenan Munn-Francis, co-lead in George Jaques’ BFI London Film Festival premiere Black Dog.

Three of the listed actors have previously been named Screen UK & Ireland Stars of Tomorrow: Polite Society’s Priya Kansara (2022), Jonsson and McKenna Bruce (both 2023).

For the first time this year, Bifa is partnering with talent support organisation We Are Bridge on a development programme to assist the longlisted performers. The six-month programme will include sessions on career development, wellbeing, casting and financial literacy, plus networking opportunities and a safeguarding training session for those responsible for looking after on-screen talent.

Last week longlists were unveiled for the new talent, international, documentary and Raindance Maverick categories, with the shorts longlist revealed yesterday.

The five nominees in each category will be announced on Thursday, November 2; with winners revealed at the Bifa ceremony on Sunday, December 3.

Last year’s Breakthrough Performance award went to Safia Oakley-Green for The Origin – the first time the award had been presented, following Bifa’s removal of gender neutral categories earlier in 2022.
