BAFTAs 2016: Acting Nominations in Pictures

the revenant leonardo dicaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio earned a Best Actor nomination for his role in gritty revenge film The Revenant. This is the fourth Best Actor nomination for the actor, including a nomination for The Wolf of Wall Street in 2014.

Steve Jobs

Michael Fassbender's portrayal of the eccentric innovator earned him a Best Actor nomination for Steve Jobs. In addition to an Orange Rising Star nomination in 2009, Fassbender has been nominated for two previous film roles.

Bryan Cranston has received his first BAFTA nomination for Best Actor with his role in Trumbo, portraying the blacklisted screenwriter.

The Danish Girl

Eddie Redmayne garnered a Best Actor nomination for his role as transgender artist Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl. Redmayne has previously won the Best Actor BAFTA in 2015 for his portrayal of Steven Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

The Martian

Matt Damon has earned a Best Actor nomination for his role as an astronaut stranded on Mars in The Martian. This is Damon's second BAFTA nomination.

For her role in the The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander has been nominated in the Best Actress category. This marks the second nomination for the actress, including a 2016 Supporting Actress nomination for Ex Machina.

Cate Blanchett has garnered a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of the title role in the romance drama Carol. Blanchett has been nominated six times previously and won three BAFTAs, including a Best Actress award for Blue Jasmine in 2014.

Saoirse Ronan Brooklyn

For her role in the coming of age story Brooklyn, Saoirse Ronan has earned a Best Actress nomination. This makes a total of three BAFTA nominations for the young actress, including a nod for The Lovely Bones in 2010.

Portraying a kidnapped woman in Room, Brie Larson has garnered a nomination in the Best Actress category. This is Larson's first BAFTA nomination.

maggie smith lady in the van

Maggie Smith stars as a cantankerous homeless woman in The Lady in the Van, which has earned her a Best Actress nomination. The veteran star has been nominated 13 times and has earned five BAFTAs, including her first win in 1970 for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

mark rylance bridge of spies

Mark Rylance has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies. This is the actor's first nomination.

idris elba beasts of no nation

Idris Elba portrays a brutal African warlord in the Netflix original feature film Beasts of No Nation. He has earned his first BAFTA nomination in the Best Supprting Actor category.

benicio del toro

Benicio del Toro earns a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in Sicario, a gritty drama about the war on drugs. This marks the second nomination for del Toro in addition to a win for Traffic in 2001.

mark ruffalo spotlight

For his role as a dogged investigative journalist in Spotlight, Mark Ruffalo has garnered a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Ruffalo has been nominated twice previously including a nod for last year's Foxcatcher.

christian bale the big short

Christian Bale earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as a brilliant and eccentric financial fund manager in The Big Short. This marks the third nomination for Bale alongside his roles in The Fighter (2011) and American Hustle (2014).

rooney mara carol

Rooney Mara garnered a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role opposite Cate Blanchett in the romance drama Carol. This is Mara's first BAFTA nomination.

kate winslet steve jobs

For her role in the biopic Steve Jobs, Kate Winslet has earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Winslet has been previously nominated seven times and has won two BAFTAs. Her first win was in 1996 for her performance in Sense & Sensibility.

ex machina

Alicia Vikander has garnered a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as a robot in sci-fi thriller Ex Machina. Vikander is nominated twice this year, in both the Lead and Supporting Actress categories for her roles in The Danish Girl and Ex Machina respectively.

jennifer jason leigh the hateful eight

Jennifer Jason Leigh earns a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as the criminal Daisy Domergue in The Hateful Eight. This is her first BAFTA nomination.

julie walters brooklyn

Julie Walters garners a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in immigrant tale Brooklyn. Walters has been nominated five times and been awarded two BAFTAs, including a win for Billy Elliot in 2001.
