EXCLUSIVE:  Emily Carey, Martin Freeman, and Sam Spruell will star in the drama Oddly Flowers, which is scheduled to begin shooting in St. John’s, Newfoundland, next week before moving to Cornwall and London in late March.

Jordan Canning wrote, directs and produces the story about family, love, and carving one’s own path based on Jessica Grant’s novel Come, Thou Tortoise. Carey, whose credits include House Of The Dragon, will portray a young woman who has grown up in a carefully contained world with her eccentric scientist father Walter (Freeman), her uncle Thoby (Spruell), and her beloved pet mouse, Wedge.

When Audrey unexpectedly finds herself alone over the Christmas holidays, she turns to charming inventor Judd (Alex Eling) to help her unravel the half-truths that shaped her childhood. What unfolds is an adventure that takes Audrey from the windswept island of Newfoundland to England on a transformative journey through grief, inherited myths, and a lifelong fear of flying in search of the family she was never allowed to know.

Marc Tetreault and Jason Levangie are producing for Shut Up & Colour Pictures, in partnership with Mike Goodridge and Yoav Rosenberg of Good Chaos, and Canning’s Get Set Films. Ernie Grivakis, Javi Hernandez, Harry Grivakis, and Claire Peace-McConnell serve as executive producers on Oddly Flowers, which is produced in association with Telefilm Canada.

Freeman’s credits include Black Panther and The Hobbit films and TV hits Sherlock and Fargo. Spruell stars in HBO’s A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms and his credits include H Is For Hawk, Insidious: The Bleeding World, and the TV series Fargo. Rounding out the cast are Alistair Petrie, Lindsay Duncan, and Melanie Nicholls-King.

“I’ve been carrying this story with me for more than 15 years – ever since I first read Jessica Grant’s remarkable novel and began imagining its world on screen,” Canning said. “To finally bring it to life with a cast of this calibre is beyond anything I allowed myself to hope for. This has been a long journey, but having such an extraordinary group of actors at the heart of the film makes the wait entirely worthwhile.”

VVS Films is the Canadian distributor and plans a 2027 nationwide holiday release. European rights remain available heading into this week’s EFM in Berlin.
