‘All Of A Sudden’

Neon has set Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All Of A Sudden for a North American theatrical release on November 25 and is planning an awards campaign for the Japanese-French language drama.

The film premiered in competition at this year’s Cannes festival, where its two leads, Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, were jointly awarded the best actress prize. Efira is also set to receive the Leopard Club Award at this year’s Locarno festival in recognition of her career in cinema.

Shot in Paris and Kyoto, All Of A Sudden centres on the bond between the head of a French care home for the elderly and a Japanese theater director battling cancer.

The film is Hamaguchi’s follow-up to Evil Does Not Exist and 2021 Oscar winner Drive My Car.

As well as directing, Hamahuchi wrote the script, loosely inspired by real letters published in Makiko Miyano and Maho Isono’s book When Life Suddenly Takes A Turn, in collaboration with Lea Le Dimna.

The film is produced by David Gauquié, Julien Deris, Jean-Luc Ormières and Renan Artukmaç for France’s Cinefrance Studios; Hiroko Matsuda, Kosuke Oshida and Yuji Sadai for Japan’s Office Shirous and Bitters End; Bettina Brokemper for Germany’s Heimatfilm; and Joseph Rouschop for Belgium’s Tarantula.

Neon acquired North American rights from Cinefrance at this year’s European Film Market.
