As it prepares to return to in-person artist development Labs this summer Sundance Institute has announced the 2022 Fellows across its signature Directors, Screenwriters, and Native Labs.

Nineteen emerging creators, eight from the Native Lab and 11 from the Directors and Screenwriters Lab will be supported at this year’s Labs as they work to develop original work for the screen, with guidance and mentorship from seasoned creative professionals.

The Native Lab focused on development of storytellers from Native and Indigenous backgrounds ran online from May 2-6 and continues in-person from May 9-14 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

It comprises five Native Lab Fellows and three Indigenous Program Full Circle Fellows (US-based Native artists aged 18-24), supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Adam Piron, director of the institute’s indigenous programme, oversees the sessions with interim manager Moi Santos.

Participants are: Justin Ducharme with Positions (Canada); Taietsarón: sere ‘Tai’ Leclaire with How To Deal With Systemic Racism In The Afterlife (USA); Daniel Pewewardy with Residential (USA); Tiare Ribeaux with Huaka’i (USA); and Tim Worrall (Ngāi Tūhoe) with Ka Whawhai Tonu - Struggle Without End (New Zealand).

2022 Full Circle Fellows are: Kymon Greyhorse, a Navajo + Tongan + 2Spirit film director; Anpa’o Locke, an Afro-Indigenous filmmaker; and Zoë Neugebohr, an Odawa-Ojibwe, writer-director.

The Directors Lab runs May 31-June 14 in-person at the Sundance Resort The Screenwriters Lab takes place from June 21-24 and will take place online. Both Labs are overseen by Michelle Satter, founding senior director of the Institute’s artist programmes, and Ilyse McKimmie, deputy director of the feature film programme.

2022 Sundance Institute directors and screenwriters labs fellows are: Dina Amer with Cain and Abel (USA-Fra-Egy); Zandashé Brown with The Matriarch (USA): Caledonia Curry and Meagan Brothers with Sibylant Sisters (USA); Hasan Hadi with The President’s Cake (USA-Iraq); Michael León and Ashley Alvarez with Crabs In A Barrel (USA); Eliza McNitt with Black Hole (USA); Olive Nwosu with Lady (Nigerai-UK); Neo Sora with Earthquake (USA-Jap); and Yuan Yuan with Late Spring (USA-China).
