‘The Sheep Detectives’

Amazon MGM’s The Sheep Detectives is the widest new release in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend, as Mortal Kombat II and Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour also launch.

Sony is distributing Amazon’s The Sheep Detectives in 654 locations. Hugh Jackman leads an ensemble cast in this offbeat murder mystery about a herd of sheep who endeavour to solve the murder of their beloved shepherd. It is written by Craig Mazin, whose credits include TV series Chernobyl and The Last Of Us. Further cast includes Nicholas Galitzine, Hong Chau, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Emma Thompson, Brian Cranston, Bella Ramsey, Regina Hall, Chris O’Dowd and Patrick Stewart.

Event release Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour is out in 572 sites, over the weekend only, via Paramount. James Cameron co-directs the 3D concert film with Eilish, spotlighting the US singer’s Manchester shows. Other recent concert films include EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert which opened on £1.1m earlier this year and Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour (£5.7m in 2023); and The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl (£3.5m in 2025).

Video game sequel Mortal Kombat II is opening in 537 venues for Warner Bros. The original film was released in May 2021 as a PVOD initially, owing to the Covid pandemic, before a theatrical release later that month, where it grossed over £530,000 across its run.

The sequel follows fan favourite champions who are pitted against each other in the ultimate battle to defeat the dark ruler. Simon McQuoid directs with a cast including Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph and Marryn Ford.

The music documentary Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition is opening in 257 cinemas via Universal. The film is directed by Malcolm Venville and charts the band’s five-decade career.

Park Circus is re-releasing Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 84 locations.

Japanese historical drama Kokuho launches in 73 sites for Vue Lumiere. The Cannes 2025 premiere centres on the son of a gangster family who is adopted by a kabuki actor. It was nominated for an Oscar in best make-up and hairstyling.

Met Film is releasing the documentary Our Land in 39 venues. Orban Wallace’s film explores the “right to roam” debate over the English countryside.

Carla Simon’s Romeria opens in 32 cinemas for Curzon. The Spanish drama, which premiered at Cannes last year, follows a young woman searching for the truth about her deceased biological father.

To celebrate David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, Altitude is re-releasing his 2020 documentary A Life On Our Planet which looks at humanity’s impact on nature and the British broadcaster’s hopes for the future.
