
Universal horror Obsession is the widest new release this weekend in UK and Ireland cinemas, while several studios have key re-releases.
Curry Barker’s Obsession is opening in 487 locations. The film centres on a music store employee who uses a supernatural toy to wish that his childhood friend were in love with him. It premiered to critical acclaim at Toronto film festival where it screened as part of the Midnight Madness programme.
Universal also has a re-release of the 2001 animation Shrek in 463 sites. The film grossed over £30m in its original run.
Elsewhere, Picturehouse Entertainment has its widest release ever with Steven Soderbergh’s The Christophers which opens in 352 venues. Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel star in the Toronto premiere exploring the relationship between a famous artist and a forger hired by his children to complete his work.
Warner Bros is re-releasing Space Jam for its 30th anniversary in 200 cinemas. On its first outing in 1997, the live-action/animated feature debuted with £1.5m from 366 locations and went on to gross £11.7m.
Documentary Northern Soul: Still Burning is opening in 154 locations via Munro Film Services. Alan Byron’s feature centres on the underground music scene of the 1970s which saw forgotten Black American soul artists become legends in working-class clubs in Northern England.
Hong Kong‘s Ciao UFO launches 53 venues for Central City Media. The sci-fi sees childhood friends reconnect over the memory of spotting a UFO years before.
Mubi is opening László Nemes’s Orphan in 27 sites. Set in Hungary in 1957, the story centres on a young boy who meets a brutish man claiming to be his father. It had its world premiere at Venice film festival.
BFI Distribution is releasing a 4K restoration of Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos in 13 locations.
Further releases include re-releases of Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick via Paramount; Ben Wheatley’s crime comedy Normal via Vertigo Releasing; and Indian romantic comedy Pati Patni Aur Woh Do via Zee Studios.
