‘The Smashing Machine’

Kathryn Bigelow’s A House Of Dynamite, Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, and Luca Guadagnino’s After The Hunt are among the films selected for the 82nd Venice Film Festival (August 27 - September 9).

The first two are among 21 Competition titles, with further Competition entries including Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly starring George Clooney, Olivier Assayas’ The Wizard Of The Kremlin starring Jude Law as Vladimir Putin, Mona Fastvold’s The Testament Of Ann Lee, and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi.

The selection was announced by artistic director Alberto Barbera, who said in this morning’s press conference that Amazon Studios requested for Guadagnino’s After The Hunt starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield to play out of competition.

Six of the 21 Competition titles are directed by women.

The Competition lineup features three previous Golden Lion winners: Gianfranco Rosi, who won the award in 2013 for documentary Sacro GRA and returns with Sotto Le Nuvole; Yorgos Lanthimos, who competes this year with Bugonia after winning two years ago with Poor Things; and Mexican filmmaker del Toro, who won in 2017 with The Shape Of Water.

Rosi is making his third appearance in Competition alongside Baumbach, while Lanthimos becomes a four-timer along with French directors Assayas and Francois Ozon.

It’s del Toro’s second time in Venice Competition, along with Bigelow, Fastvold, Ilkido Enyedi, Park Chan-wook, Pietro Marcello, Franco Maresco, Laszlo Nemes, Cai Shangjun and Paolo Sorrentino for opening-night film La Grazia (he won the Silver Lion grand jury prize in 2021 with The Hand Of God).

Kaouther Ben Hania, Jim Jarmusch, Leanardo Di Costanzo and actor/filmmakers Benny Safdie, Shu Qi and Valerie Donzelli all make their Venice Competition debuts.

Barbera also unveiled two new sections as part of the official selection. Spotlight replaces the Horizons Extra strand, and has eight titles including Potsy Ponciroli’s Motor City starring Shailene Woodley.

The festival has also added a film and music strand to its out of competition documentary titles, with films including Robert Gordon’s Newport And The Great Folk Dream, about the 1960s Newport Folk Festival at which Bob Dylan played.

Alexander Payne will preside over the jury, which also includes Mohammad Rasoulof, Fernanda Torres, Stephane Brize, Maura Delpero, Cristian Mungiu and Zhao Tao. Julia Ducournau will chair the Horizons jury.

The Venice Critics’ Week line-up was announced yesterday.
