Multiple offers from studios and streamers are understood to have come in for Chloe Domont’s Sundance finance thriller Fair Play following the world premiere on Friday.
The film about a promotion at a New York hedge fund that pushes two newly engaged employees to the edge stars Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor and screens again in US Dramatic Competition today (January 21) to public and P&I.
Fair Play hails from the partnership between MRC and Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street to support emerging directors, and Star Thrower Entertainment. Domont’s feature debut follows TV work on the likes of Billions, Ballers and Clarice.
Johnson and Bergman served as executive producers and Leopold Huges, Ben LeClair, Allan Mandelbaum, Tim White and Trevor White produced.
Meanwhile documentaries are stirring up interest. Of note are Ben Braun and Chiaki Yanagimoto’s Aum: The Cult At The End Of The World (Submarine/Fifth Season are selling) about the cult leader behind the 1995 sarin gas attack on Tokyo subway commuters; Nicole Newnham’s The Disappearance Of Shere Hite about the noted 1970s feminist sex researcher (Submarine/WME co-represent rights); and Jakub Piatek’s Pianoforte, about young competitors in the Chopin Piano Competition. All three premiered on Friday.
Andrew Durham’s Premieres selection Fairyland is also piquing interest and screened on Friday. It stars Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy in the tale of an unconventional father-daughter relationship in San Francisco spanning the 1970s into the onset of the AIDS epidemic. A second public screening is scheduled for today. UTA Independent Film Group represents US rights and Arclight Films handles international.
On Friday Magnolia Pictures acquired worldwide rights from CNN Films to Lisa Cortés’s US Documentary Competition entry Little Richard: I Am Everything in a deal that is understood to have closed on site.
Magnolia plans to release the film in April in the US and Magnolia head of international sales Lorna Lee Torres and international sales manager Austin Kennedy will launch sales at the EFM in Berlin next month. HBO Max is an executive producer and holds US and international SVoD streaming rights.
Bungalow Media + Entertainment produced for CNN Films and HBO Max, in association with Rolling Stone Films, with Sundance alum Dee Rees on board as executive producer. Magnolia EVP Dori Begley and SVP of acquisitions John Von Thaden brokered the deal with Stacey Wolf and Kelly MacLanahan of CNN Worldwide.
Today brings anticipated world premieres for William Oldroyd’s Lady Macbeth follow-up Eileen; Theater Camp from Cha Cha Real Smooth producer Erik Feig; Maite Alberdi’s The Mole Agent follow-up The Eternal Memory; Bad Behaviour, marking the feature directing debut of Jane Campion’s daughter Alice Englert and starring Jennifer Connelly and Ben Whishaw; and Madeleine Gavin’s documentary Beyond Utopia about the lengths people go to secure freedom.
