Nordic Film Commissions (NFC) has elected Sweden’s Mikael Svensson as its new president, and also appointed a new board with voices from across the Nordics.

Svensson replaces outgoing president Solveig Sigmond Ræstad.

The NFC network has also expanded to include Greenland, which has recently established the Greenland Film Institute.

Teija Raninen, film commissioner at West Finland Film Commission, and Ida Tirkkonen, film commissioner at Film Lapland, are stepping down from the board, while Reetta Turula from North Finland Film Commission, Ísak Kári Kárason from Film in Iceland, and Marika “Mysan” Sundqvist from Åland Film Commission have been elected as new board members.

They join Svensson, existing VP Meghan Beaton, and deputy board member Adrian Mitchell to form the new NFC board.

Svensson is a veteran commissioner and locations expert known around the globe. He will continue to serve as head of Southern Sweden Film Commission, which includes the Skåne region, an area that has welcomed shoots including The Bridge and A Man Called Ove.

Svensson said: “I have been part of this collaboration since the early days of Scandinavian Locations more than 15 years ago, and I have seen the strength that comes from working together across the Nordic region. At a time when international collaboration is more important than ever, the Nordic Film Commissions play a vital role in connecting people, creating opportunities, and strengthening the Nordics as a world-class production destination.”

The NFC brings together 18 regional and national commissioners and has been involved in several strategic initiatives, including a sustainability pledge launched in 2023 and a networking event in Cannes with Screen Ireland. Its main focus is the continued promotion of film locations, incentives, service providers and co-productions.

Starting this year, the Nordic region will begin implementing the Nordic Ecological Standard, which won the Sustainability Initiative award at Screen’s Global Production Awards in Cannes and is supported by broadcasters, producers’ associations, film funding institutions, and industry partners across the region.
