9 Moons
Dir. Patricia Ortega
Director Ortega continues her exploration of sexual diversity following Sundance 2023 entry Mamacruz. She now turns her focus to gender transition and pregnancy, with a comedy drama about the importance of holding onto your dreams. Now in post, 9 Moons stars Zack Gomez, Jorge Sanz, Kiti Manver and Maria Leon, and is produced by Seville-based La Claqueta, with Acheron Films, Amania Films and Menuetto Films.

A Sucker’s Born Every Minute
Dir. Arantxa Echevarria
Echevarria’s latest marks a tonal shift to comedy after counter-terrorism thriller Undercover, which grossed $11.3m (€9.5m) at the Spanish box office — a record for a female director in Spain. Hugo Silva, Susi Sanchez, Dafne Fernandez and Jaime Olias star in the story of a former talent-show star who is pulled into an art heist through a past love. It is produced by Atresmedia Cine, LaZona and Lamia Producciones, and is now in post.

Balandrau: Where The Fierce Wind Blew
Dir. Fernando Trullols
This survival drama draws on real events to chart a story of friendship, love and endurance against extreme natural forces. It is based on a true story from December 2000, when a group of friends set out under clear skies to climb Mount Balandrau in the Pyrenees, before being caught in the most violent storm ever recorded in the region. The cast is led by Alvaro Cervantes, Bruna Cusi and Marc Martinez. Balandrau: Where The Fierce Wind Blew marks the feature debut of Trullols, assistant director on JA Bayona’s A Monster Calls. It is produced by Lastor Media and Vilaüt Films, and co-produced by TV outfit Goroka Contents.

El Mal
Dir. Juanma Bajo Ulloa
El Mal (which translates as ‘Evil’) is the anticipated next feature by Bajo Ulloa, whose credits include Butterfly’s Wings in 1991. The story centres on an ambitious journalist, known for her controversial take on sensitive topics, and a moderately successful writer who is approached by a disturbing stranger to write a book about his extraordinary gift — as the greatest killer in history. Singer and actress Natalia Tena stars with Belen Fabra and Tony Dalton. The director’s own Fragil Zinema produces.

Evil Dress
Dir. Jacob Santana
Santana’s completed horror film marks star Belen Rueda’s return to the genre following The Orphanage (2007) and Julia’s Eyes (2010). Rueda plays a woman who moves into a new house with her daughter, only to uncover a disturbing pattern: families who previously lived there suffered unexplained tragedies, particularly the young girls. Vera Centenera co-stars. It is produced by AF Films and Forgotten 2 Entertainment, with AF Films also releasing theatrically in Spain.

Iván & Hadoum
Dir. Ian de la Rosa
Panorama title Iván & Hadoum marks the feature debut of de la Rosa, a writer on hit series Veneno and director of short Víctor XX, which participated in Cannes’ Cinéfondation in 2015. The drama stars multidisciplinary artist Silver Chicon and singer Herminia Loh and explores themes of identity, family legacy and reclaiming one’s body through love. It is produced by Spain’s Pecado Films, Vayolet, Port au Prince and Saga Film, and was selected for the Berlinale Co-Production Market in 2023, where it received the Eurimages co-production development award.

Ladies’ Hunting Party
Dir. Pedro Aguilera
Inspired by Carlos Saura’s 1966 film The Hunt, Aguilera’s fourth feature stars Blanca Portillo, Carmen Machi and Rossy de Palma as longtime friends who reunite for a rabbit hunt one autumn day near Madrid. Old grudges and tensions threaten to take the festive gathering to a brutal and unexpected outcome. It is produced by Jaime Gona’s nascent Madrid-based outfit Gonita Filmaccion.

Out Of This World
Dir. Albert Serra
The eighth feature from Serra — director of 2022’s Pacifiction, which won two César awards, and San Sebastian 2024 Golden Shell winner Afternoons Of Solitude — will be his first feature to shoot mostly in English. Set amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, the story centres on a US delegation sent to Russia to resolve a sanctions-driven economic standoff. Riley Keough, F Murray Abraham and Elizaveta Yankovskaya star in the film, which is produced by Serra’s Andergraun Films alongside France’s Les Films du Losange, Idéale Audience Group, Portugal’s Rosa Filmes and Germany’s Pandora Film Produktion. It is now in post.

Ravalear: Not For Sale
Dirs. Isaki Lacuesta, Pol Rodriguez
The first Spanish series selected for Berlinale Special Series is directed by Lacuesta, double Golden Shell winner for 2011’s The Double Steps and 2018’s Between Two Waters, and co-directed by Rodriguez. The duo teamed on Goya 2025 triple winner Saturn Return. The thriller focuses on a family-run restaurant in Barcelona’s Raval district, which faces oblivion having been taken over by an investment fund. The cast features Enric Auquer, Maria Rodriguez, Quim Avila, Sergi Lopez and Francesc Orella. Arcadia Motion Pictures produces alongside Eter, Supernova, 3Cat and Umedia. The series will launch as an HBO Max Original in Spain and Portugal.

Watch Your Dreams
Dir. Gonzalo Bendala
Aralan Films, whose credits include Pol Rodriguez and Isaki Lacuesta’s Saturn Return and Benito Zambrano’s Out In The Open, has produced this genre film about a disillusioned lawyer who becomes obsessed with a waitress he cannot be with in real life. They meet in each other’s dreams before the boundary between subconscious and reality begins to collapse. Oscar Casas, Fiona Palomo, Jose Coronado and Najwa Nimri headline the feature, which is now in post.
